Transactions can be summarized into similar group or accounts. A company compiles a list of accounts to make the chart of accounts. In year 1, the firm sold 300 units of its product at $5 per unit. What is a Sales Account?
These refunds accumulate in the “sales returns and allowances” account throughout an accounting period. This account is a contra-revenue account, which means you subtract it from total, or gross, revenue on the income statement. Sales revenue can be shown on the income statement by either the gross revenue amount or net revenue. Gross revenue is before contra-revenue accounts like allowance for sales returns, bad debt expense, any potential sales discounts, etc.
Gross revenue is reduced to net revenue after accounting for all of the previously discussed contra-revenue accounts. It can be found in the current assets section of a company’s balance sheet or near the bottom of the liabilities column if service revenues are used to pay for expenses before they’re billed. Service revenue is usually classified as either debit or credit, depending on how it’s recorded. The most common type of service revenue is revenue received in advance for future services to be performed.
Is Accrued Revenue an Asset?
Creating graphs of previous sales data can help you spot patterns. You can also review competitor reports and perform market research. Just know that if your sales environment is particularly volatile and prone to significant fluctuations, plotting trends will not be as useful. When you’re forecasting sales, the last thing you want is a garbage-in-garbage-out situation.

Sales revenue is the first line of the income statement, which is why it’s commonly known as a “top line” metric.
